A colourful marketplace of cultures: Bazaar Berlin ends with a big increase in visitor numbers
On Sunday the 61st Bazaar Berlin came to a close, with a 21 per cent increase in attendance over 2022. From 8 to 12 November around 35,000 visitors took the opportunity to purchase fascinating gifts from 430 exhibitors representing 56 countries. For almost 30 per cent this was their first visit to the long-standing event. The high-quality handicrafts, designer articles, natural goods and fair trade products on offer were exactly to visitors’ tastes. An initial survey by Messe Berlin found that over 96 per cent of those interviewed were satisfied with their shopping tour around the world.
Whether contemporary fashion items or home accessories from Ghana, handmade jewellery from Tanzania, or eye-catching, colourful jackets from Sweden – exhibitors from all over the world had unique wares in store for the public. That particularly impressed visitors, with over 95 per cent rating the wide range on offer as positive. They were mostly interested in jewellery, food, fashion, natural goods and fair trade products. The World Market and Art & Style segments also attracted keen interest.
Visitors came not only to look around, but according to the survey were also keen to spend money. Around 90 per cent said they had bought something at Bazaar Berlin – the average purchase totalled 173 euros. Close to 95 per cent of respondents said they would be back at Bazaar Berlin from 6 to 10 November 2024. A similar percentage said they would recommend the event to relatives, friends and acquaintances.
Exhibitors were satisfied too. Esther Piehl, Senior Project Manager for Bazaar Berlin: “There was a unique international atmosphere inside the halls. Both new and regular exhibitors were really impressed by the visitors they met here in Berlin, who were keen to look around and took an interest in both the products and the stories exhibitors had to tell.“
Exhibitors from all over the world give a positive verdict
This was the first time Kazakhstan was represented with a national display. “It was very important for us to be at this leading trade fair“, said Irina Kharitonova, director of the Creative Tourism Department at the Kazakh Tourism National Company. “We intend to be back next year. A lot of visitors came to our stand to find out about our culture. They were very interested in our exhibitors and their traditional products. We are very pleased and satisfied.”
Dorcas Apoore of ASIGE from Ghana was equally impressed: “Bazaar Berlin is a great opportunity to sell products and establish new contacts with producers and buyers – I am very pleased. Before coming here we had very few customers in Germany. So many visitors came to see us and praised our products. It was a great feeling. We will be back next year and are already making preparations for our return.”
Ines Milagros Liefeld-Choque, Artesania Las Peruanitas has been exhibiting at Bazaar Berlin since 2007: “We were very satisfied again this year. The quality of visitors was even better than in 2022. Last year many people were less ready to spend – but over the five days of this event we saw that many people wanted to treat themselves and were much keener to buy our alpaca wool pullovers. We have lots of regular customers who once again came to visit us. Naturally we will be back next year.“
“This was the first time we exhibited at Bazaar Berlin. Both we and most of our customers liked the venue here at the Palais am Funkturm – the location here is ideal for what we offer“, said Thomas Voßebürger, managing director of Jowollina. “After selling our products exclusively online we made a spontaneous decision to exhibit here. Customers were able to actually see and touch our products. It was a good idea for us to try out an exhibition, particularly in the run-up to Christmas.“

In 2023 over 430 exhibitors from 56 countries displayed high-quality handicrafts, typical regional specialities, individual fashion items, jewellery, accessories, eco and fair trade products and natural goods in the theme worlds under the headings World Market, Art & Style, Fair & Social, Natural Living and Winter at Home. Close to 35,000 visitors came to Bazaar Berlin 2023 to purchase exotic articles and gifts from all over the world.
For Bazaar Berlin, combining good business with social responsibility is an important aspect. Since it was launched in 1962 as ‘Partners for Progress’ in support of development policy aims, it regularly promotes programmes supporting fair trade goods that are produced sustainably and under ethically fair conditions.
